Woodridge Park Orienteering
Meet Notes - December 1, 2007

Welcome to Orienteer Kansas' event at Woodridge.  We've designed the courses to be a bit shorter than usual because many of you will be running tomorrow's Possum Trot at Shawnee Mission Park.  We don't want to wear you out.

Starts

The start area is about 100 meters along the trail that goes north from the camping area (the trail head is just behind the toilets).

The first start is at 1:00 p.m. the last start is at 2:00 p.m.

The courses will close by 3:30 p.m.  We will remove the control markers at 3:30 p.m.

Courses

4.6 km "middle distance" course designed by Ken Walker.  Ken is our orienteering-celebrity course setter (he designed www.attackpoint.org).  Ken set the course on paper.  I made a few changes to make the orienteering a bit more pleasant or to use features that were more distinct.  The course retains the feeling of Ken's original design.  See the map notes about the areas of deep grass.

2.5 km "intermediate" course that I designed.  The course is suitable for first-time orienteers, orienteers who are used to running white/yellow, and others who want a bit less distance.

Map

The scale is 1:10,000 and the contour interval is 3 meters.

I made a few revisions over the last couple of weeks.  I originally fieldchecked the map about ten years ago.  At the time, I was making the map to be used for training.

Deep grass covers many of the rough open areas.  Running through the deep grass is tough.  The map shows these areas as light yellow with vertical green lines (rough open with slow run and good visibility).  Because running through the deep grass is slow, you can consider routes that use trails and forest to avoid some of the deep grass.  In general, the deep grass is a bit easier to run through at the edges of the fields.

I did not update the minor trails around the camping area or the campfire circles.
